Name glyphs

From sona pona, the Toki Pona wiki

If you are a learner, this information will not help you speak the language. It is recommended to familiarize yourself with the standard style, and to be informed and selective about which nonstandard styles you adopt.

In sitelen pona, name glyphs are special glyphs which represent names rather than common words. Unlike standard names in cartouches, many name glyphs do not indicate pronunciation.

Rationale

The conception of name glyphs was likely a consequence of the pictographic nature of sitelen pona. Common (non-proper) words and their referents are represented by meaningful symbols, and name glyphs extend the same to proper words.

An argument in support of name glyphs is the freedom of self-representation. By comparison, following pu-style of cartouches, a speaker might have very few glyph choices for a letter of their name, which might not resonate with them; nasin sitelen kalama might increase their options. Name glyphs are the extreme case wherein the speaker can create an entirely new glyph to their tastes.

Name glyphs can also be appealing when the name's referent already has a self-representation, such as a logo or avatar. In the inverse of animal glyphs becoming popular characters in Toki Pona communities, speakers may adapt their fursonas to the perceived art style of sitelen pona.

List of name glyphs

This is a list of name glyphs present in any font. These glyphs are not included in the UCSUR. Therefore, they can only be typed using Private Use Area (PUA) codepoints, zero-width joiner (ZWJ) sequences of other codepoints (mainly but not all sitelen pona), or OpenType ligatures.

Many of these were originally compiled by lipamanka as part of the fonts linja sike and linja lipamanka.
