nasin sitelen kalama pi linja lili (lit.literal translation 'small-lines sound writing method') is an experimental short style of writing sitelen pona names, designed and proposed by jan Sonja in late February 2024.

In this system, tally marks are written across the cartouche line below each glyph, indicating the number of phonemes (or, equivalently, letters of their sitelen Lasina spelling) to pronounce. For one-letter words, one or no tally mark can be written.

Comparison with nasin sitelen kalama

The system is similar to the earlier nasin sitelen kalama, but it takes up less horizontal space and isn't based on morae (both features that may be seen as pros or cons). Additionally, it allows taking syllable-final n from the start of syllables na, ni, nu, ne, and no regardless of their position in the word.

Due to its recency, the style is not encoded into the UCSUR or supported in many sitelen pona fonts.

Criticism and limitations

A major criticism of nasin sitelen kalama pi linja lili is legibility. Because the tally marks are small, compact, and not generally clustered (as in 𝍸), groups of more than 2 or 3 marks may be difficult to count. By using sufficiently many phonemes from one glyph or adjacent glyphs, grouping might break down. That is, it may become difficult to tell which tally marks belong to which glyphs. Reading speed may also be slower than using morae.

The system also has several limitations and points of criticism in common with the earlier nasin sitelen kalama, such as ambiguous readings for certain glyphs such as ale (ale or ali).
