sitelen Kansi

From sona pona, the Toki Pona wiki
(Redirected from hanzi)

sitelen Kansi, tokiponized from hanzi (Chinese: 漢字 / 汉字, pinyin: hànzì, IPA: /xan˥˩t͡sɹ̩˥˩/) or kanji (Japanese: 漢字, IPA: [kã̠ɲ̟d͡ʑi]), is a term for adaptations of Toki Pona to Chinese characters. Various writing systems fall under this category, generally choosing different characters for Toki Pona words, sometimes also using Japanese kana.

jan Josan and jan Mato's suggestions[edit | edit source]

jan Mato initiated an early sitelen Kansi proposal on the Toki Pona Forums in July 2010. The motivation was to compress Toki Pona text with better efficiency and Unicode support than previously suggested methods, such as the dingbat-based "Toki Pona Script". Within a few days, jan Josan created a list of single-character substitutions.[1]

A modification of this system appeared on the Classic Word List on tokipona.net, labeled "zh", alongside another "jp" version with some different kanji choices and the use of hiragana for particles.[2] These versions have been credited to jan Mato.[3]

In March 2018, jan U proposed a revision to these character sets, based on "historical and general characters" with influence from Mandarin, other Chinese languages, and Japanese.[4]

In April 2019, enervation proposed a revision to the zh character set based on modern Mandarin Chinese. Some of the suggestions were rescinded;[5] they are listed in the comparison table below for completeness.

Tencent QQ community transliteration[edit | edit source]

In kulupu pi toki pona lon ilo QQ, the most recognized transliteration is absorbed from a spreadsheet passed down from its predecessor, named the Second Polling Scheme of Toki Pona in Chinese Characters. The name suggests that there has been a polling on each character, and the characters are listed as well as losing candidates. The details of the polling, or whether there has been a prior ‘first’ scheme, is unknown.
