ChatGPT is a chatbot developed by OpenAI. It is based on a large language model trained on hundreds of gigabytes of data from the internet. This includes websites in and about Toki Pona, so the chatbot displays a rudimentary understanding of Toki Pona. Some beginners try to use it to learn Toki Pona, but many competent tokiponists consider it unsuitable for that purpose.

Pitfalls

While ChatGPT sometimes provide facts about the language and translate some simple sentences into English, the Toki Pona text it produces is often incoherent. As with other topics, the bot can be wrong about even basic concepts while still sounding totally confident, limiting its usefulness for education. The larger GPT-4 model, used by ChatGPT Plus and some modes of Bing Chat, produces more convincing text, but can still display a fundamental lack of understanding.
