The word {{tp|tonsi}} is derived from {{w|Mandarin Chinese}} {{lang|zh|{{wikt|同志}}}} (''{{lang|zh-Latn|tóngzhì}}'', lit. The semantic space of {{tp|tonsi}} originally proposed was broader than the currently accepted version. It meant "to break normative boundaries,", and with {{tp|[[jan]]}} would refer to nonbinary folks. {{tp|tonsi}} was also not the original form of the word, as there were several other proposals.<ref name="inwin2019b"/><ref name="inwin2019c"/>
