The word {{tp|eliki}} is derived from the {{wpw|Cherokee language|Cherokee}} {{lang|chr|ᎡᎯᏍᏗ}} (''{{lang|chr-Latn|ehisdi}}''), meaning "pain, distress".

The philosophy of {{tp|eliki}} is similar to {{wpw|identity-first language}} (for example, "autistic person", "Deaf person"), which certain disabled communities prefer to {{wpw|person-first language}} ("person with …"), because their {{tp|eliki}} are an inseparable part of who they are.

The {{tp|[[sitelen pona]]}} glyph for {{tp|eliki}} ({{spt|eliki}}) consists of a dot between two vertical jagged lines, (compareinspired by the glyphs for {{tp|[[kon]]}}, {{tp|[[pakala]]}}, {{tp|[[telo]]}}).
