{{tp|eliki}} is derived from the {{wp|Cherokee}} word ''ehisdi'' (ᎡᎯᏍᏗ) meaning "pain, distress".

As such, specific usage varies between speakers. {{tp|eliki}} generally describes immutable characteristics that can cause pain or distress but should be viewed as value-neutral or have become part of one's identity.
