ChatGPT is a chatbot developed by OpenAI. It is based on a large language model trained on hundreds of gigabytes of data from the internet. This includes websites in and about Toki Pona, so the chatbot displays a rudimentary understanding of Toki Pona. Some beginners try to use it to learn Toki Pona, but many competent tokiponists consider it unsuitable for that purpose.
Pitfalls[edit | edit source]
While ChatGPT sometimes provide facts about the language and translate some simple sentences into English, the Toki Pona text it produces is often incoherent.[1][2] As with other topics, the bot can be wrong about even basic concepts while still sounding totally confident,[3][4] limiting its usefulness for education. The larger GPT-4 model, used by ChatGPT Plus and some modes of Bing Chat, produces more convincing text, but can still display a fundamental lack of understanding.[5]
