2001

August 2001

In 8 August, Sonja Lang publishes the first public post about Toki Pona on her website at GeoCities, under the username Marraskuu, meaning "November" in Finnish.[1] In her post and email logs, Lang claims that the entire language has "150 words". The website is later moved to tokipona.org[2] and kisa.ca/tokipona.[3]

On 9 August, the website claims, "Toki Pona! The Natural, Simple Language. Toki Pona is a pidgin-like language designed to express basic human realities by reducing words and ideas to their most simple and universal meanings and avoiding unnecessary complexity. Inspired by the principles of Taoism and primitivism, the entire language has only 14 sounds and under 200 words".[4]

Matthew Chrisholm (jan Matejo), Lang's roomate at the time, seems to be the second Toki Pona speaker.

December 2001

On 6 December, the word "cute" is added to the description ("Toki Pona is a cute, pidgin-like language").[5]

2002

March 2002

On 24 March 2002, a Toki Pona group is created on Yahoo! Groups.[6] On the group, a poll is created about whether the now-obsolete third-person pronoun iki should be changed as it was deemed to be too long and too similar to ike. The options were to not change anything, drop iki in the subject when it is understood, change iki to i, or find another solution.[7]

On the same day, Toki Pona is reviewed by Damian Yerrick,[8][9] who "has pointed out problems that eventually were corrected".[10]

On 26 March, Lang publishes a dictionary of country names.[11]

April 2002

On 8 April, Chuck Smith creates an article about Toki Pona is created on the English Wikipedia, titled "Toki Pona language".[12] At this time, the English Wikipedia has only around 30 000 articles[13] (compared with around 6.7 million articles as of November 2023).[14]

May 2002

On 15 May, Lang proposes the word kiwen for "rock, stone, metal, material", instead to the previously used compound wawa ma ("hardness of the earth").[15] This proposal was decided by a vote,[16] resulting in 6 votes for kiwen and 2 votes for wawa ma.[17]

On 16 May, another poll on the Yahoo! group about iki is created as the result of the previous one is to find a new solution. The options are to not change anything, change iki to ipi, change iki to ona, or find yet another solution.[18]

On 19 May, Nikita Ayzikovsky (jan Nikita), who seems to be the third fluent speaker of Toki Pona,[19] creates the illustration AEI pi toki pona.[20] This chart becomes well recognized as it was included in the pronunciation lesson from Bryant Knight's (jan Pije) learning course[21] and in the Spanish-language course toki pona en 76 lecciones ilustradas (Toki Pona in 76 illustrated lessons) by Eliazar Parra Cárdena.[22] From September 2008 to January 2019, it is part of the Toki Pona article on Wikipedia.[23] It was later replaced with a cleaner version by Aronora.[citation needed…]

On 31 May, following the second poll, iki was replaced with ona.[24][25]

July 2002

On 8 July, a forum user named Viktoro proposes the idea of turning Toki Pona into a three-vowel language and the idea is explored by Lang, but subsequently rejected.[26]

On 16 July, Lang publishes the Toki Pona phonetic conversion guidelines.[27] Some proper names for countries are updated, such as France become ma Kanse instead of the previous ma Lanse.[11]

October 2002

On 10 October, Knight publishes the poem "kili lili".[28] It is later included in his o kama sona e toki pona! course, becoming a well-recognised poem among the community.[29]

November 2002

On 1 November, ali becomes an alternative to ale,[30][31] en is used between head nouns instead of modifiers, kan ceases to exists, and kin is used for emphasis of any word.[32]

2003

February 2003

On 12 February, Lang introduces the question type anu seme, inspired by the German particle oder.[33]

July 2003

On 25 July, Knight completes the first version of his o kama sona e toki pona! course.[34] The course was later translated and updated throughout the years. It was the main source of learning Toki Pona until Knight shut his site down in 2020.

The website address moves several times, originally from angelfire.com/cantina/tokipona, through geocities.com/tokipona,[35] tokipona.nytka.org,[36] tokipona.esperanto-jeunes.org,[37] bknight0.myweb.uga.edu/toki,[38] and finally, to tokipona.net/tp/janpije.[39]

2004

March 2004

On 31 March, Lang asks on the Wikipedia-l mailing list how to add a Wikipedia in Toki Pona.[40][41]

April 2004

On 4 April, the official Toki Pona Wikipedia is created under the domain tp.wikipedia.org.[42] The choosing of this prefix was debated. Other proposals included art-toki-pona, [43][44], art-tp, x-toki-pona,[45] and x-tp.[46]

There are disputes about the address and about the existence of this edition of Wikipedia.[47][48]

May 2004

On 28 May, The Toki Pona Wikipedia reaches 100 articles.[49] The 100th article was "Jan Juta".

November 2004

On 16 November, the Toki Pona Wikipedia is closed by Jimbo Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia.[50][51][52][53] It later moves to Wikicities.

The ISO 639-3 language code request is rejected as “the ISO 639-3 Registration Authority has determined that the request for this new code element is premature. The propagation of a new constructed language is often a short-lived interest of limited scope; few constructed languages have lasting impact in the world community of languages to become more than mere novelties. Toki Pona seems to fit the novelty category, as an intentionally “minimalist” language. During 2007 there was some media interest in Toki Pona, in which its novel aspects were highlighted. If Toki Pona survives the next few years and continues to develop, both in applications and in user base, then the RA will be open to consider a new request for assignment of a code element for Toki Pona.”[73][74]

2008-09-03

The Toki Pona article on Wikipedia is nominated for a Language and literature good article for the first time. The review seems to be quite a weak one, considering Wikipedia’s reviewing guidelines are already in existence.[75] The review simply reads the following: “I believe that this article is worthy of Good Article status. It's prose is excellent, and goes into depth about its subject. Certain sections of the article could be expanded slightly, but it has done enough to recieve good article status.”[76]
