Overhaul, including possible split[edit | edit source]

For transparency, collapsed below is the first post of a thread regarding this article on the Discord server. The post-migration editors of the article seem to agree with this write-up. We are starting to discuss how to repair the article, and whether to split it as suggested or at other points in time.

The History article is a monster with several issues, cf. #"Articles needing work", #"Notability", maybe #"Rotten external links"…

1. Split and merge into the era articles?
Just to break up the sheer size and make the other points seem more manageable.

2. Present → past tense, passive → active voice
2020 and 2021 still need fixing.

3. Citations
There's writing without proper ref templates, and then there's creating TinyURL links. There are 48 left to expand, archive, and cite the canonical URLs.
…Then migrate the other refs to {{cite web}}.

4. Events → summaries
The article was imported with single-date-based subsections for individual events. A single project could be spread across half a dozen dates for minor updates, like:

2019-09-03

The reviewer of the good article nomination of the Toki Pona article on Wikipedia is not responding,[174][175][176] so another reviewer takes his place.[177][who cares?]

I've consolidated some of these cases into single paragraphs. Consider going further and only listing the start date, inciting event, and outcome, moving excess play-by-play onto relevant articles.
2020 and 2021 also need to be converted to month-based subsections.

5. Redundancy
The article is still written like sona pona doesn't exist. Lots of prose could be stripped out and moved to other articles. A good example: https://pastebin.com/X5M9pJcA

6. Priorities
Undue weight is lent to English Wikipedia red tape, random subreddits and Google Play courses hitting milestone user counts, etc. Good for judging meta recognition and maybe usage, but feels completely offtopic.

That's the brunt of it imo. In trying to be comprehensive, this article is a terrible overview of Toki Pona history—you are not slogging through it. Update the prose and refs, split the details across the wiki.

The tense and voice fixes, TinyURL expansions, and month-based subsections have been implemented. The Wikipedia nominations are moved to a separate article and massively pared down (by thousands of bytes!).
Citation formatting, summarization of certain events, notability concerns, and a decision on how to split the article are outstanding. Menasewi (talk) 17:02, 8 April 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
