In 2005, the article was proposed for deletion but was kept. In 2007, it was deleted, then reinstated with newfound sources.
First and second deletion nominations
On 3 January 2005, the Toki Pona article was nominated for deletion for the first time. Discussion ended on 21 January, and consensus was to keep the article.

In 2008, "Toki Pona" became a Project:Good articles/Language and literature, albeit through a vague review. In 2010, it was delisted due to unreferenced sections, inconsistent citation formatting, overreliance on primary sources and personal websites, and excess detail. The reassessment's only reply agreed, "As a major writer of the article, &hellip; it doesn't feel particularly GA to me. More fun than encyclopedic."
On 30 May 2007, the article was nominated for deletion for the second time. Discussion ended on 6 June, with consensus being to delete the article. However, on 9 July, this decision was discussed in a deletion review. On 14 July, the deletion was overturned "in light of new information" discussed. On 25 July, the deleted article moved back to mainspace.

Two more deletion proposals failed in 2012 and 2013.
First good article nomination and reassessment
On 3 September 2008, the Toki Pona article on Wikipedia was nominated for a Language and literature good article for the first time. The review seems to be quite a weak one, considering Wikipedia's reviewing guidelines are already in existence. The review simply reads:
<blockquote>
I believe that this article is worthy of Good Article status. It's [sic] prose is excellent, and goes into depth about its subject. Certain sections of the article could be expanded slightly, but it has done enough to recieve [sic] good article status.
</blockquote>

In 2018, the article peaked in viewership from the Langfocus video on Toki Pona.
On 13 March 2010, it was requested to check whether the good article (GA) status of the Toki Pona article needed reassessment. The reviewer criticized many unreferenced sections, inconsistent citation formatting, overreliance on primary sources and personal websites, and excessive detail. The assessment was placed on hold to give contributors a chance to improve the article. The only reply was by a self-described major contributor to the article, who said "it doesn't feel particularly GA to me. More fun than encyclopedic". On 20 March, the article was delisted from "Language and literature good articles".

A good article renomination took most of 2019 to pass. Select facts were then filed for the main page's "Did you know" column. A fact about the number of words (as recognized pre-ku) ran on 4 November, to another view spike.
Third and fourth deletion nominations
On 5 February 2012, the article on Wikipedia was nominated for deletion for the third time. Discussion ended on 13 February, and consensus was to keep the article.

On 15 March 2013, the Toki Pona article on Wikipedia was nominated for deletion for the fourth time. Discussion ended on 23 March; consensus was to keep the article.

Increased viewership and second good article nomination
On 23 March 2018, the article reached a peak in viewership The nomination process continued throughout most of the year. As of 3 September, the reviewer of the good article nomination was not responding, so another reviewer took his place. Later on 30 September, the page passed good article criteria, becoming a language and literature good article. After this, the former reviewer appeared with additional comments.

On 4 October 2019, some facts from the Toki Pona article on Wikipedia were nominated to appear in the "Did you know …" column on the Wikipedia main page. As of 13 October, an editor had indicated willingness to review the nomination. A fact about the number of words (as recognized pre-ku) was approved on 28 October and later appeared on 4 November, generating over 9,000 views (compared to about 280–380 views on a regular day).

Toki Pona Wikipedia[edit | edit source]

Proposed Toki Pona Wikipedia logo from 2022

On 31 March 2004, Sonja Lang asked on the Wikipedia-l mailing list how to add a Toki Pona language edition of Wikipedia.[1][2] On 4 April, a Toki Pona Wikipedia was created at tp.wikipedia.org.[3] The choice of subdomain was debated; other proposals included art-toki-pona, [4][5] art-tp, x-toki-pona,[6] and x-tp.[7] There were disputes about the address and about the existence of this edition of Wikipedia.[8][9]

The Toki Pona Wikipedia reached 100 articles on 28 May 2004;[10] the 100th article was "Jan Juta".

On 16 November 2004, Wikipedia cofounder Jimbo Wales closed the Toki Pona Wikipedia.[11][12][13][14] It later[when?] moved to Wikicities[a] before being independently hosted as lipu Wikipesija. By 2010, "[a]fter being closed and its database locked some time ago, the Tokipona Wikipedia ha[d] been completely removed."[15][16]

Tokiponists have occasionally speculated on whether a new Toki Pona Wikipedia will be created or migrated from Wikipesija. In 2022, one was requested using Wikipesija as the required "test project". The request is still open but mostly supported as of March 2024.[17]

On 8 April 2002, with the English Wikipedia at only about 30 000 articles,[18] Chuck Smith created the article "Toki Pona language".[19]

In 2005, the article was proposed for deletion but was kept.[20] In 2007, it was deleted,[21] then reinstated with newfound sources.[22]

In 2008, "Toki Pona" became a language and literature good article, albeit through a vague review.[23] In 2010, it was delisted due to unreferenced sections, inconsistent citation formatting, overreliance on primary sources and personal websites, and excess detail. The reassessment's only reply agreed, "As a major writer of the article, … it doesn't feel particularly GA to me. More fun than encyclopedic."[24]

Two more deletion proposals failed in 2012[25] and 2013.[26][27]

In 2018, the article peaked in viewership[28] from the Langfocus video on Toki Pona.

A good article renomination took most of 2019 to pass.[29][30] Select facts were then filed for the main page's "Did you know" column.[31] A fact about the number of words (as recognized pre-ku) ran on 4 November,[29][32] to another view spike.[33][34]

Did you know ... that Toki Pona, a constructed language devised in 2001, uses only around 120 to 125 root words?
