Toki Pona is often used to write poetry. Original poems are regularly featured in works such as the Official Toki Pona series and lipu tenpo, and through contests such as utala musi pi ma pona. Factors encouraging this form of literature might include:

• Toki Pona's connate association with philosophical and artistic usage
• The general importance of word choice, brevitas, and constrained writing, further augmented in many well-known styles of speech
• Forms of figurative language yielded by contextuality and broad semantic spaces, for instance the concrete–abstract axis
• The ascription of aesthetics to Toki Pona or to a particular original writing system, including phonaesthetics
