Toki Pona Wikipedia

Proposed Toki Pona Wikipedia logo from 2022

On 31 March 2004, Lang asked on the Wikipedia-l mailing list how to add a Toki Pona language edition of Wikipedia.[1][2] On 4 April, an official Toki Pona Wikipedia was created under the domain tp.wikipedia.org.[3] The choice of this subdomain was debated. Other proposals included art-toki-pona, [4][5] art-tp, x-toki-pona,[6] and x-tp.[7] There were disputes about the address and about the existence of this edition of Wikipedia.[8][9]

The Toki Pona Wikipedia reached 100 articles on 28 May 2004;[10] the 100th article was "Jan Juta".

On 16 November 2004, Wikipedia cofounder Jimbo Wales closed the Toki Pona Wikipedia.[11][12][13][14] It later[citation needed…] moved to Wikicities[a] before being independently hosted as lipu Wikipesija.

As of 21 March 2010, "[a]fter being closed and its database locked some time ago, the Tokipona Wikipedia ha[d] been completely removed."[15][16]

Tokiponists have occasionally speculated on whether a new Toki Pona Wikipedia will be created or migrated from Wikipesija.

In March 2022, a new Toki Pona Wikipedia was requested, using the independent lipu Wikipesija as the required "test project". The request is still open but mostly supported as of March 2024.[17]

History of articles about Toki Pona

English Wikipedia article

On 8 April 2002, Chuck Smith created an article about Toki Pona on the English Wikipedia, titled "Toki Pona language".[18] At this time, the English Wikipedia had only around 30 thousand articles[19] (compared with around 6.7 million articles as of November 2023).[20]

First and second deletion nominations

From 3 to 21 January 2005, the Toki Pona article was first nominated for deletion, but was kept.[21]

On 30 May 2007, the article was renominated for deletion. By 6 June, consensus was to delete the article.[22] This decision was reviewed and overturned from 9 to 14 July due to finding new sources;[23] the deleted article returned to mainspace on 25 July.

First good article nomination and reassessment

On 3 September 2008, the Toki Pona article was first nominated as a language and literature good article, albeit with a rather weak review compared to the guidelines,[24] reading:[25]

I believe that this article is worthy of Good Article status. It's [sic] prose is excellent, and goes into depth about its subject. Certain sections of the article could be expanded slightly, but it has done enough to recieve [sic] good article status.

On 13 March 2010, another user requested reassessment, criticizing many unreferenced sections, inconsistent citation formatting, overreliance on primary sources and personal websites, and excessive detail. The only reply was by a self-described major contributor to the article, who said, "it doesn't feel particularly GA to me. More fun than encyclopedic".[26][27] On 20 March, the good article status was delisted.

Third and fourth deletion nominations

The article was renominated for deletion and kept twice more, from 5 to 13 February 2012,[28] and from 15 to 23 March 2013.[29][30]

Increased viewership and second good article nomination

On 23 March 2018, the article peaked in viewership[31] after YouTube channel Langfocus published a video on Toki Pona.[32]

A good article renomination started on 8 January 2019, and finally passed on 30 September.[33][34]

On 4 October 2019, facts from the Toki Pona article were nominated for the "Did you know …" column on the Wikipedia main page.[35] A fact about the number of words (as recognized pre-ku) was approved on 28 October[35][36] and appeared on 4 November,[33][37] generating over 9,000 views (compared to a typical 280–380 views).[38][39]

Did you know ... that Toki Pona, a constructed language devised in 2001, uses only around 120 to 125 root words?
