The word ante is derived from Dutch ander, meaning "other, different".[1]

The sitelen pona glyph for ante (󱤆) represents two diverging bent lines. Its exact origin is unclear. It has a similar diagonal cross shape to ala, utala, and weka, all of which have to do with absence or conflict. The glyph may also be derived from sama.
