The word kolo is derived from several languages, including Swahili guruwe, Zulu ingulûbe (/inɡulûːɓe/, "pig"), Kongo ngulu ("pig"), Spanish guarro ("pig") and gorrino ("piglet"), Japanese ゴロゴロ (gorogoro, "rumbling"), and English grunt. kolo was coined by soweli pi loje walo on 1 October 2021, originally as koro[5] but changed to fit Toki Pona phonology shortly after.[6]

The sitelen pona glyph for kolo (kolo) depicts a pig, viewed in profile.[7] In the original glyph, the pig is seated, with the legs matching those of the glyph for kijetesantakalu, and the outline is also broken at the tip of the ear. kolo was added to the Fairfax and sitelen seli kiwen fonts in February 2024. There, it is redrawn in an upright position with a full outline, a mouth, and a curly tail. In both versions of the glyph, only one eye dot is drawn, unusually for animal words.
