Under construction This article needs work:
  • Other notable fonts
  • Sonja's introduction of pepper namako (had to be before the release of Tokipono: La lingvo de bono)
  • Introduction of sets of glyphs for community-specific nimi sin, such as those in kulupu pi toki pona pi ma Anku, nasin panke
If you know about this topic, you can help us by editing it. (See all)

This is a timeline of notable developments in sitelen pona, a logographic Toki Pona writing system created by Sonja Lang and expanded by several Tokiponists and communities.

2001–2002

Toki Pona logo, an early precursor to sitelen pona

sitelen pona notably did not exist for much of the pre-pu era. The Toki Pona logo, which dates to the beginning of Toki Pona ("2001 probably", according to jan Sonja), was worked into sitelen pona rather than descending from it.[1] Nonetheless, the logo likely influenced many features of sitelen pona, such as combined glyphs and the emitters radical.

20??–2013

Work on sitelen pona began relatively shortly before the publication of the book Toki Pona: The Language of Good. Prior to 2014, jan Sonja published snapshots of sitelen pona on the Toki Pona Forums.[citation needed] In 2013,[citation needed] Sonja published a page listing 20 sitelen pona glyphs as a sample of The Language of Good.[2]

2014

In 2014, jan Sonja published Toki Pona: The Language of Good, including a chapter with a full description of sitelen pona. The book refers to the writing system in English as hieroglyphs,[3][a] which lends credence to the script being partly inspired by Egyptian hieroglyphs.

jan Wesi published the first sitelen pona font, toki pona OTF.[citation needed]

2016

In October 2016, with feedback from jan Tepan (Stephan Schneider), jan Same proposed glyphs for words that were considered "extinct" as of The Language of Good, and not given glyphs in the book: kin, kipisi, monsuta, namako, oko, and pake.[4] Glyphs for apeja (designed by Jakob Vogel) and and kijetesantakalu were decided by a vote.

In December 2016, jan Same published version 1.0 of the linja pona font. It was one of the earliest sitelen pona fonts and the first to include post-pu glyphs, as well as featuring cartouches and many combined glyphs.[5][6] As a result, linja pona and its included glyphs, geometric design with altered proportions, and even its implementations of sitelen pona features, became highly influential. linja pona was last updated in 2021, and is only since coming to be viewed as dated due to advancements in font design and standardization, and increased critique of its divergences from the pu style.

2019

In July 2019, jan Same created a series of Toki Pona video lessons, o kama sona e sitelen pona, using his linja pona font. This marked a shift from sitelen pona being taught separately from Toki Pona with methods such as flash cards, to the availability of learning resources that integrate sitelen pona into general Toki Pona lessons, some even using it as the only writing system instead of sitelen Lasina.

2020

In July 2020, nimi Elemenopi proposed several glyphs for non-pu words on the r/tokipona subreddit.[7] As of August 2020, nimi Elemenopi created the r/OffThePu subreddit and compiled a list of glyphs for words in nimi ale section 1b,[8] with an updated list in November 2020.[9]

2021

As of 28 January 2021, lipamanka had started work on the font linja sike (then named linja pona sike),[10][11] which would release later that year.

Within about that day, nimi Elemenopi again made an updated list of proposals,[12] and jan Sa published another list of used and proposed glyphs.[13]

In August 2021, jan Lepeka proposed sitelen pona for her Under-ConScript Unicode Registry (UCSUR) project, which unofficially assigns constructed writing systems to codepoints in the Unicode Private Use Areas. sitelen pona's representation in the UCSUR was updated in January and May 2022 in collaboration with jan Tepo.[14]

2022

On June 27, 2022, jan Lepeka created the sitelen seli kiwen font family,[15] inspired by the etymological Toki Pona periodic table created by jan Melon in December 2021.[16][17]

2023

On 19 January 2023, lipamanka created linja lipamanka, a successor to linja sike.[18]

In November 2023, jan Lepeka's omni-script Fairfax font family gained sitelen pona support.[citation needed]

2024

On 3 February 2024, jan Sonja published the first book in the su series, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Toki Pona edition), written bilingually in sitelen pona and English. It uses the nasin nanpa font,[19] and some variant glyphs, including a previously little-known numeric mute glyph (mute2). Variants of mute and sewi are used to clarify semantic meaning,[20] which, while likely not unheard of before, was an uncommon style compared to speakers preferring a variant glyph in all cases.

Notes

  1. The term "hieroglyph" is now almost always clipped to "glyph" and used to refer to specific characters, with sitelen pona being loaned to name the writing system as a whole.
