Eras are time periods in Toki Pona history, each defined by an event that has a major impact on the language's usage and style. Features of Toki Pona are often distinguished by the era in which they originated, or have been most prevalent. This is used to label and sort words and styles of speaking, alongside their book presence and word usage category.

So far, events that are largely recognized as era-defining have all been the release of official material by jan Sonja, chiefly the Official Toki Pona book series. However, because su is a series of storybooks rather than a reference work, it is not yet clear whether a pre- and post-su delineation will be useful or misleading. In addition, because the speaking community has more conscious control over the language's development as of ku, it is possible that future eras will be defined by others' works, or through other methods of periodization.
