mun is a core content word relating to astronomical and nighttime objects.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The word mun is derived from English moon.[1]

The semantic space of mun includes astronomical objects, such as stars (including the Sun), planets, asteroids, natural and artificial satellites,[2][3] as well as specfically the Moon.

There are many stars in the night sky.

As a modifier, it refers to something related to astronomical objects or the Moon. For example, the phrase tenpo mun is commonly used to mean "month", referring to the duration of time of the Moon's orbit. Beginners sometimes use that phrase for "night".[4] However, that is widely discouraged.
