The word misikeke is derived from Ojibwe mashkiki ("medicine, drug"). It was coined by jan Sonja.[when?][1][2][better source needed]

The most commonly used sitelen pona glyph for misikeke () represents an upright pill capsule. It was designed in July 2020 by nimi Elemenopi.[4][5] It is coincidentally similar in shape to the lowercase Greek letter theta (θ).
Another proposed glyph (misikeke2), designed by jan Muna and jan Sala in 2021, depicts a mortar and pestle,[6] a tool set used since the Stone Age and across cultures for crushing and grinding food and medicine, and a symbol of pharmacy and apothecaries.

The sitelen sitelen glyph for misikeke represents a mortar and pestle. It was inspired by the glyphs for kasi (kasi) and poki (poki). The glyph was designed by Jonathan Gabel (jan Josan), lon Jawin, jan Pensa, and jan Saki in 2021.[7]
