The word misikeke is derived from Ojibwe mashkiki, meaning "medicine, drug". It was coined by jan Sonja.[1][2]

The most commonly used sitelen pona glyph for misikeke () represents a pill capsule. It was designed in July 2020 by nimi Elemenopi.[4][5] Another proposed glyph (misikeke2), designed by jan Muna and jan Sala in 2021, depicts a mortar and pestle,[6] a tool traditionally used in many cultures for creating medicine, among other uses.
