nowi is a marginal content word relating to connections, mutuality, and exchange.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The word nowi is derived from Vietnamese nối, meaning "to join" and "to continue". It was coined by ilo Powa and kulupu Solali in 2023.

Semantic space[edit | edit source]

The semantic space of nowi includes connection, relation, joining, complementary and mutual relationships.

nowi can also describe exchanges, overlapping the semantic space of esun. This is because, at the time of nowi's coinage,[1] it was intended as a replacement. Linku elaborates that esun "implies that non-mutually-beneficial relationships are not real relationships." However, it is not considered necessary to replace nowi with esun in one's style of speech;[1] the words can coexist.

sitelen pona[edit | edit source]

The sitelen pona glyph for nowi (nowi) is composed of upper and lower counterclockwise harpoon arrows with barbs outwards.[2] It represents an exchange, as in certain currency exchange symbols.
