kiwen is a core content word relating to hard and solid objects.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The word kiwen is derived from Finnish kiven, genitive of kivi, meaning "stone, rock".[1] This word was proposed by jan Sonja in 2002, replacing the compound wawa ma ("hardness of the earth").[2][3] This proposal was decided by a vote, resulting in 6 votes for kiwen and 2 votes for wawa ma.[4]

Semantic space[edit | edit source]

The semantic space of kiwen includes hard and solid objects, that is, objects whose form is resistant to change.[5] Prototypically, it usually refers to rocks, stones, minerals, and metals.

The sitelen pona glyph for kiwen (󱤛) is a pentagonal shape depicting a cut gemstone as seen from the side, representing rocks and hard materials by extension. It may specifically be a diamond, well known as the hardest natural material.
