kalamARR is a joke word and nimi ku lili. It is a variant of kalama based on pirate sounds, and sometimes specifically referring to them or invoking them as an onomatopoeia. It breaks Toki Pona's phonology and phonotactics with a rhotic that is generally pronounced like the English R, [ɹ].

Etymology[edit | edit source]

It is derived from the word kalama and the English onomatopeia arr for an imitation of pirates. It was coined by jan Olipija some time before they submitted it to the Toki Pona Dictionary polls in 2021.[1][2]

Semantic space[edit | edit source]

The intended meaning of kalamARR is "pirate speak".[3]

For years following the publication of Toki Pona Dictionary, it wasn't clear what the intended meaning of the word was, because the Dictionary only included it in the phrase jan kalamARR, as a translation of "pirate". Given the word's similarity to kalama, some proposed the meaning to be "pirate noise", which was used as the word's definition in Linku. Some others proposed the meaning to be "piracy".

sitelen pona[edit | edit source]

There are multiple proposed sitelen pona glyphs for kalamARR. The most common proposed glyph (kalamARR) combines the mouth radical from kalama (kalama) with the cross eyes from moli (moli). Other proposed glyphs tend to combine the kalama glyph with stereotypical pirate symbols, such as a hooked hand prosthesis or an eye patch.
