Etymology[edit | edit source]
The word seli is derived from Georgian ცხელი (cxeli /t͡sxeli/, "hot").[1]

The semantic space of seli includes the quality of heat and and actions relating to it, such as cooking, baking, or a chemical reaction that produces heat. The antonym of this word is lete, which is related to coldness.

Geographically, seli is sometimes used to describe places close to the equator. One example is ma Amelika seli for South America which crosses the equator, contrasted with North America (ma Amelika lete). Using seli to mean "south" in all cases would be biased around the Northern Hemisphere and may require proper context in order to be understood. This sense of seli is first attested in 2007.[2]
