The word tokana is derived from Tongan tokanga, meaning "attention, focus". It was coined by jan Sojapoja in 2020.[1]

The semantic space of tokana includes focus, detail, and attention.[2] It describes "any kind of concentrated matter."[3] It can also be a preverb.[1][4]
