The semantic space of toki includes any form or act of communication.[2] This includes spoken, signed, and written language, as well as non-verbal communication, such as gesturing. Communication does not require an external recipient, it includes intrapersonal communication, such as thinking, imagining, and talking or reading to oneself. It includes communication from non–human creatures, such as animals, plants, or even inanimate objects. toki is typically used as a headnoun for language names.

The word toki, as an interjection, is the most common greeting phrase for "hello". This is sometimes interpreted either as a command ("speak!") or announcing that communication has started.[3][4]
