The word api is derived from Latin apis, meaning "bee", and whence English apian. api was coined by heav "immediately upon joining [ma pona pi toki pona] and learning about toki pona",[1] presumably on 17 March 2021.[2]

api has several variant sitelen pona glyphs, all depicting a bee. They were designed by waso Keli, with help from jan Juwan and nanpa Tonpite, in 2024.

The sitelen pona glyph for misa (misa) represents a mouse facing towards the right. There are many variations of the glyph, optionally adding ears (rounded or pointed) and legs. It was designed by kulupu kasi in 2021, with workshopping from misa Ewis, ilo Sasi.[5]
