The word awase is derived from Armenian հարվածել (harvacel), meaning "to hit, to strike". It was coined by jan Lenoka in 2021.

The semantic space of awase includes bumps, knocks, and jolts. Linku compares it to the words utala, pakala, tawa, and anpa.

The word awase is not often used in sitelen pona. A proposed glyph (awase)[by whom? when?] may represent bumping into the side of something.
