The word awase is derived from Armenian հարվածել (harvacel), meaning "to hit, to strike". It was coined by jan Lenoka in 2021.

The word awase is not often used in sitelen pona. A proposed glyph (awase)[by whom? when?] may represent bumping into the side of something. It is similar to the glyph for monsi (monsi), but has emitters to the left instead of a location dot. In practice, it is unknown whether this glyph sees significant use.
