Etymology
The word itomi is derived from English hit-or-miss, in reference to a memetic lyric from the diss track "Mia Khalifa":
Hit or miss, I guess they never miss, huh?
According to Linku, itomi was coined by "jan Wesu OR jan inwin, jan Lemon"[what does that even mean?] in 2019.
Semantic space
The semantic space of itomi includes schadenfreude (pleasure derived from someone else's misfortune) as well as subtle and indirect insults and disrespect.

A proposed sitelen pona glyph for itomi (itomi) is derived from the pu glyph for meli (meli) with a check mark shape below. It was designed by nimi Elemenopi in July 2020.[1][2]
